I’m Kathleen, the creator of Away for a Spell!

I serve the travel wanderlusters, the digital nomads, creatives with a camera in hand, and the non-traditionalist.

I travel around the world, photographing, taking the odd video, and writing blog posts on Away for a Spell on what I experience and learn about travel and work away from the 9-5. I post my beautiful photos on Pinterest and Instagram. I share travel stories and advice on my blog and introduce some of this content on Instagram.

Besides travel and photography, I love wine, whisky, spicy food, indie music, horses, dogs and stationary. On the weekends or when I need a break from this side-hustle and want to shut my mind off, I will be cooking, baking, taking bubble baths with candles symmetrically placed around the tub.

How it all got started - story time.

Have you every agonized over a decision that would change your life, only to make the wrong choice?

I have.

Have you ever wondered what you would do with your life that would truly make you happy, inspire others, and live up to your potential?

I certainly have.

In March of 2017, I faced the decision of staying on my working holiday in Edinburgh, Scotland or accepting a job offer back home in Vancouver, Canada. This wasn’t any job offer. It was for a company that I had previously applied for and vowed to get. It was also in the Tourism industry, which I had enjoyed working in before.

As I was struggling to maintain a stable office job from recruitment agencies in Edinburgh, I thought I was making the practical choice in accepting the job offer and returning home. Unfortunately, my heart and mind were still hanging around Edinburgh. It took me some time to re-adjust to Vancouver. In the meantime, I channeled all the pain and regret into making Away for a Spell  and learning blogging and photography.

Eventually the time came when I decided to leave the job that brought me home. I breathed a sigh of relief and began working more seriously on Away for a Spell , photography, social media and lifestyle of being location and time independent.

Since the start of Away for a Spell…

Since my travel blog site was launched a year ago, I have written more blog posts that I’m proud of, taken photos I like, traveled to several places on my list. It has been a full time job learning about social media, photography, blogging, and how to have a successful business. The time and money I have invested in this is invaluable. Of course, the journey continues and I likely will never be done learning. But, that is truly the exciting part!

I have also connected with a group of inspiring entrepreneurial women in Vancouver through events and a mastermind course. Community is everything when you are building your own business.

I have learnt so much and have a clearer idea of what I want to do with this site. I’m still learning and reaching out to make this more business-minded. With a constantly full-to do list, balancing contract office work, and lots of motivation, join me on my path to making a living as a travel influencer, because it is the only thing I will become.
